It's already August 2025, and we're gearing up for the Vuelta a España, the last of the three Grand Tours of the year. This naturally includes warm-up races, one of which is traditionally the Tour of Burgos. IDLProCycling.com looks ahead!
A glance at the list of winners of the Tour of Burgos reveals quite a few big names. Alberto Contador, Mikel Landa, Remco Evenepoel, and so on. The last two years, the victory went to Visma | Lease a Bike, with Primoz Roglic in 2023 and Sepp Kuss in 2024. The Dutch team will not be participating this season.

Tour of Burgos 2025: Course, favorites stage wins and times
Stage 1, Tuesday, Aug. 5: --Olmillos de Sasamon-Burgos (205.0 km)
The Tour of Burgos starts with a stage for punchers. There are a few climbs along the way, and the final kilometer is also quite challenging, near the Alto del Castillo in Burgos.

On day two, the riders will ride from Cilleruelo de Abajo to Buniel, on mostly flat roads. After 162 kilometers, the sprinters will probably get their chance.

Stage 3, Thursday, Aug. 7: Monasterio de San Pedro Cardeña-Valpuesta (185.0 km)
On day three, the first serious climbing of the Tour of Burgos will take place. Thirty kilometers from the finish, the riders will tackle the Puerto de Orduna, an eight-kilometer climb with an average gradient of seven percent. They will then cross a plateau to Valpuesta, the finish line.

There are also transition stages in five-day races. On Friday, the riders will be sent to Regumiel de la Sierra, where there are a few hills to conquer in the final.

Stage 5, Saturday, Aug. 9: Bodega Cillar de Silos-Lagunas de Neila (138.0 km)
The annual decisive stage in the Tour of Burgos is back again this year: Lagunes de Neila. A 6.5-kilometer climb at 9.2 percent, this is where the overall classification of the race will be decided.

Favorites final classification Tour of Burgos 2025
We already saw some of the participants on Saturday in the Clasica San Sebastian, where the balance of power was clear. Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates-XRG) had the upper hand in the tough Basque classic, with the Italian ultimately taking the victory. Can he build on that in Burgos?
In terms of climbers, the competition is a bit tougher, because with Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers), Jai Hindley (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious), and Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), there are also a few guys at the start who have already finished on the podium in major tours in the past.
Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) also proved in the Giro how good he is on the climbs, while there are several strong teams at the start. Javier Romo, Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar), Juan Pedro Lopez, Lennard Kämna (Lidl-Trek), Leo Bisiaux (Decathlon AG2R), Johannes Kulset (Uno-X), and Davide Piganzoli (Polti-VisitMalta) are all contenders for a place in the classification.
From a Dutch perspective, the participation of Wout Poels (XDS-Astana) is interesting. His teammates Lorenzo Fortunato and Harold Martin Lopez could also go far.

- Maybe I was a bit disrespectful to Heiden. What he did was unique and exceptional but he wasn't the only one who combined those distances, nowadays it is just not possible and nobody competes in both distances. The same is true for cycling with for example the combination of Roubaix and de Tour de France. - In talking speed skating, the days when Heiden did that, nobody else did that. And Eddy couldn't do the equivalent of the bike. His 200 on the velodrome was good, but not world competitive for gold. - Carsapaz and Del torro were not capable of chasing Yates. They paused and looked at each other because they didn't have it in them. Yates had kept his powder dry waiting for this stage and demolished both of them. They lost Yates won. Your second guessing is utter nonsense., if either felt they could close Yates down they would have , just like they did countless times for other riders. - Carapaz is full of it. He is absolutely irrelevant after a rant at del Toro. Isaac had no obligations to do anything for Carapaz. It should remind one of the saying that goes lke this: "If I jump off the bridge, are you going to jump too?" If Caapaz wanted to win the Giro he should have chased Yates with or without Isaac. And if del Toro could follow, then so be it. But it was Carapaz's choice to slow down and stare at Isaac. Isaac was on the radio at times and you can bet he was being told by the Team car to do just what he was doing. Did I like that he didn't set out after Yates himself, NO. But the 21 year old was probably being instructed to do what he did, otherwise you can bet we would have heard from UAE mgmt. that Isaac chose to ignore their orders. But what we did hear was they were happy with his result. Which I think was a terrible betrayal of their young rider, who I think was capable of more than that penultimate stage showed. The Giro finished on a truly sour note as far as I'm concerned, because it was not "raced" The most crucial stage of the whole 21 stage race was simply given away, playing games with the unwritten rules of bicycle racing. "Leaders jerseys responsibility" and all that nonsense. Just RACE! It was disgraceful.
