Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe signs young German climber to strengthen Evenepoel and Lipowitz

Georg Steinhauser is the first new signing announced by Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe for 2027. The German climber will make the move from EF Education-EasyPost, adding another talented mountain rider to the German team’s increasingly formidable GC group. The 24-year-old will also be reunited with an old friend and former teammate in Florian Lipowitz, whom he could support in the high mountains.

Steinhauser turned professional with EF Education-EasyPost in 2022. During that first season, he still combined racing at WorldTour level with some appearances in the under-23 ranks, but by 2023 he was racing full-time at the highest level. Performances at the Tour of the Alps and Route d'Occitanie already demonstrated his considerable climbing ability, before his breakthrough season arrived in 2024.

At the Giro d'Italia, his first Grand Tour, Steinhauser finished third on two mountain stages before finally landing the big prize on stage 17. The German went clear to claim a memorable solo stage victory, sparking emotional scenes involving his father Tobias, himself a former professional cyclist. His 2025 campaign proved more difficult, but Steinhauser bounced back in 2026 by finishing third overall at Paris-Nice and winning the young rider classification. His season became more complicated after that, although his potential remains clear at only 24 years of age. He will now continue his development with a team from his home country.

“When I was young, I was always a fan of this team and have been impressed by how they kept reaching one goal after another. Joining a German team with a very professional and international approach will certainly be a good platform for me to progress,” Steinhauser said after his move was announced.

On his new team’s website, Steinhauser also explained what he hopes to bring to one of the strongest stage-racing squads in professional cycling. “I hope to contribute to the team’s success with my aggressive style, but also by playing an important support role. I’m ready to create unforgettable memories in the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe jersey!” he said.

Sport director Zak Dempster believes the German still has plenty of room to develop. “Georg combines climbing abilities, race intelligence and an attacking mentality. He has achieved success through hard work over recent years and we believe he is still far from reaching his full potential. Together, we want to continue supporting his growth and provide him with the best possible environment to take the next step in his career,” Dempster said.

Evenepoel and Lipowitz are already central to the team’s stage-racing ambitions, while Steinhauser provides another rider capable of both attacking for his own opportunities and taking on a high-level supporting role in the mountains.
