Taco van der Hoorn sustained serious injuries after his
crash in Stage 2 of the Renewi Tour. The 32-year-old Dutch rider from Lotto-Intermarché did not start the third stage on Thursday, and an update from the hospital revealed why. Many other riders were also unable to continue after Thursday’s mass crash.
Before the start of Stage 3, Lotto-Intermarché provided an update on Van der Hoorn, who, remarkably, managed to finish Stage 2, nearly 8 minutes behind the winner. “Examinations at the hospital revealed a fracture in one of the bones in his hand. He also suffered a fracture in his elbow. Further examinations will determine the exact recovery time,”
the team said.
Van der Hoorn was still able to smile for the photo, but the crash in the
Renewi Tour mostly resulted in grim faces. Amaury Capiot (Jayco AlUla) broke his
collarbone and several ribs, and Nico Denz (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) posted on
social media that he came away with a lot of pain but no broken bones.

Corbin Strong (NSN,
medical update not yet available) and Oliver Naesen (Decathlon CMA CGM, also no update yet) did not make it to the finish, just like Denz and Capiot. Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) and Mattia Agostinacchio (EF Education-EasyPost) had already withdrawn earlier, following crashes in Stage 2 (
Abrahamsen) and the ADAC Cyclassics (
Agostinacchio). Ayco Bastiaens (Soudal Quick-Step) was ill.
On Friday, before the start of Stage 3, another list of withdrawals was announced. In addition to Van der Hoorn, Simone Consonni (Lidl-Trek,
concussion symptoms) and Kasper Asgreen (EF,
shoulder injury) also did not start.
Jonathan Milan joined them on behalf of Lidl-Trek during the third stage. His team simply reported that his injuries were causing him too much discomfort.
Haimar Etxeberria (Red Bull), Albert Torres and Filip Maciejuk (Movistar,
both battered) and Sam Welsford (Netcompany INEOS) also pulled out on Friday.
