Former professional cyclist Rohan Dennis has again come under scrutiny in his home country of Australia. The former world time trial champion was handed a five-year driving ban after the 2023 incident that led to the death of his wife, Melissa Hoskins, but was reportedly caught this week behind the wheel of a vehicle. Dennis is now expected to appear in court at a later date.

Dennis was involved in the incident that led to the death of Hoskins, herself a former cyclist, in 2023 following a domestic dispute. The couple had two children together. Earlier this year, Dennis addressed the case publicly. “It was an accident,” he said at the time. “I loved Melissa and the last thing I ever wanted was to hurt her. Never in my life did physical aggression even enter my mind during a disagreement with Melissa.”
Hoskins’ family showed leniency in the case, partly because Dennis remains responsible for caring for the couple’s two children. He did not receive a prison sentence, but was given a suspended sentence, a two-year good behaviour period and a five-year driving ban. IDL Procycling previously reported that sentence in May 2025.

Dennis has also criticised the way Australian media have covered the case. In a statement earlier this year, he said: “The media talk about how sad they are for the children. Yet they stalk, follow and intimidate not only adults in my family, but also the children.”

Dennis’ car impounded for four weeks

This week, two and a half years after Hoskins’ death, Dennis once again made headlines in Australia. The 36-year-old, whose licence had been suspended for five years, was reportedly caught driving with his two children in the car. According to South Australian police, the vehicle was impounded for 28 days and Dennis will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
Dennis himself has not yet responded publicly to the latest incident. Since ending his cycling career in 2023, the Australian has not taken on a new role in the sport. He has previously spoken about a long-term ambition to start a wine estate near Adelaide.
