Three world titles, two heart surgeries, and one last U23 chance: the Rogers family story behind Cameron's World Championship heartbreak

The on-camera outburst and its aftermath were well documented on Monday. But the deeper story of the Rogers family and their complicated relationship with time trialling has yet to be told.

Cameron comes from one of Australian cycling's most decorated families. He is the son of cyclist Peter and Raeleigh Rogers, a triathlete. His uncle Deane was a junior cycling world champion, and his uncle Michael is a three-time cycling world champion. But it is the youngest of the three Rogers brothers, Michael, who looms largest over Cameron's career.

Michael Rogers won the world time trial title three years in a row from 2003 to 2005. He competed in four Olympic Games, winning bronze in the road time trial in Athens in 2004, and competed in 12 editions of the Tour de France, winning a stage in 2014 across a 16-year professional career. Before his elite dominance, Michael himself raced at the U23 World Championship time trial, taking silver in 1999 at Verona and bronze in 2000 at Plouay.

Cameron has never hidden who inspired him. "Uncle Michael was a full-on professional," he told The Riotact in a 2021 profile. "He was the best of the best." That admiration only deepened when Cameron moved to Europe to pursue his own career. "He's the reason I'm able to ride, really," he told Cyclingnews at the Tour of Holland last October.

Michael's career came to an abrupt end when he announced his retirement in 2016. He had been diagnosed with a malformation of the aortic valve at the start of his career, and cardiac examinations later identified heart arrhythmia, meaning he had to bring an end to his 16-year career.

"I'm not prepared to put my health in jeopardy," Michael said at the time, according to ABC News. He was 36 years old.

Less than a decade later, Cameron faced his own cardiac battle. His 2025 season was a challenging one following heart surgery in February. "I ended up having to get heart surgery in February to fix some small issues," he told Cyclingnews.

By that point, he had narrowly missed a prologue win in The Hague, beaten by Ethan Hayter by just 0.28 of a second, a result that showed his talent remained intact even as his body was still recovering.

Born on 16 December 2004, Cameron turns 22 this December and will not be eligible for the under-23 category next year. Monday's time trial was his final shot at a U23 World Championship title, in a discipline that runs through his family's DNA.

He arrived in Montréal with real credentials to back up that ambition. In the summer of 2024, a then-19-year-old Cameron beat Filippo Ganna to win the Tour of Austria prologue, his first victory in an elite UCI-ranked race. This year, he won Gent-Wevelgem U23 and showed consistent form despite the disrupted 2025 season. "To be honest, I thought I could win this race, just in myself," he said after Monday's disaster.

Instead, his chain came off 10 kilometres into the race. Rogers nearly gave up but soldiered on, finishing 39th, 3:24 behind winner Ryan Gal. Cameron will now carry the Rogers name into the elite ranks,
