The time trial in the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday was won by Filippo Ganna. The Italian from Netcompany INEOS lived up to his favorite status, putting the competition at a street-length distance. Teammate Thymen Arensman was the best of the GC contenders, while Jonas Vingegaard had a difficult day, and Afonso Eulálio retained the pink jersey.

The 42-kilometer route ran from Viareggio to Massa, along the Ligurian coast in Tuscany. The riders initially headed south, with a winding first kilometer before a long straight section. A right turn then took them along the coast, finishing the same road in the opposite direction. Technically simple but physically demanding.

Van den Broek starts first, Ganna hits the road early

Frank van den Broek, last in the general classification, started first. The Dutchman from Picnic PostNL Raisin, still recovering from his crash on stage two, took it relatively easy like many of his colleagues.
Some riders in the first part of the start list had other ideas, including Max Walscheid (Lidl-Trek) and Alpecin-Premier Tech’s Johan Price Pejtersen. The German set an early benchmark after a strong finish on the slightly wet coastal roads.
Just over an hour after Van den Broek, it was time for the big favorite, Ganna. Meanwhile, Sjoerd Bax (Pinarello-Q36.5) had started and was riding at an excellent pace. Ganna immediately started smashing the intermediate times, posting 47:57 minutes to unseat Walscheid from the hot seat—an impressive performance.

Ganna sets blistering pace, Segaert follows early

Outsider Niklas Larsen (Unibet Rose Rockets) crossed the line shortly after but was 38 seconds slower than Bax. He would not remain in contention for long, as Ganna’s power was on another level. At the first intermediate, the Italian was already 41 seconds faster than Bax.
Alec Segaert (Bahrain Victorious) also aimed high. Ganna extended his lead at the second checkpoint to 1:19 over Bax, 1:54 at the third, and finally 2:04 at the finish. His absolute time: 45:53 minutes—who could get close?

Cavagna comes closest, but still far behind

GC contenders were still on the course, with Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United) posting strong times but still nearly two minutes behind Ganna. Others like Segaert (3:05) and UAE’s Mikkel Bjerg (2:33) also fell short. Even Ganna’s teammate Magnus Sheffield was 90 seconds off at the first checkpoint. Ganna’s time trial was of a very, very high caliber.
Another story was Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull). Was he recovered from a weak Sunday performance, and how close could he get to Ganna? With GC contenders already on the road, it was clear that Ganna’s time would be very hard to beat.

Arensman best of the GC riders

Arensman had a strong start, posting the second-best time at the first checkpoint. Midway, he had already clawed back a minute on Felix Gall, who had been 2:01 ahead. Derek Gee-West also posted a solid fourth-best time, promising a rise in the standings.
Ben O’Connor (Jayco AlUla) also rode well, finishing tenth at that point. Vingegaard had an okay ride—gaining time on Gall but losing too much to Arensman. Ultimately, Arensman finished second overall for the stage, the best among GC riders.
Eulálio gave his all to retain the pink jersey, but Vingegaard gained small amounts on the Portuguese rider. Gall lost 2:30 to Arensman, allowing the Dutchman to move ahead in the GC. The battle for pink was decided against Vingegaard: the Dane lost three minutes to Ganna, 1:06 to Arensman, and barely beat Michael Storer (Tudor) by a few seconds—not enough to take the leader’s jersey.
