The last chance for the real baroudeurs, the powerful riders who love hills, has arrived in the fifth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. A big battle for the breakaway is expected, but a sprint is certainly not out of the question. Mathieu van der Poel and new leader Remco Evenepoel give their thoughts on the upcoming stage in France.
Van der Poel is considered one of the top favorites for the stage win, especially after his performances and attacking spirit in the first stages. "I feel pretty good. I've recovered well and am happy with that," he tells Cycling Pro. "Today is a good last chance for me and for the team. Hopefully we can try something." His previously injured wrist is no longer bothering him. "It's okay. I can feel it, but it's not holding me back. It needs time to heal 100%, but I'm happy with everything I can do and am also satisfied with my form."
An early breakaway could be difficult, but it is still possible for the Dutchman. "Today will be different, I think. It's the last day the fast guys have a chance, and many teams want a sprint. I think it will be a more controlled stage." Also, the climbs are never really steep, making riders like Jonathan Milan favorites. "They don't look too difficult, although it is hot today. It all depends on the pace in the peloton, but I think it will be tough. We might be able to drop them, but then they'll have enough time to regroup and come back for the sprint."

Evenepoel: "A rider like Milan should be able to survive this stage"

Remco Evenepoel won Wednesday's time trial with a comfortable lead over Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. Before the start of the fifth stage, he hopes for a sprint, wearing the yellow jersey. The Belgian from Soudal Quick-Step is particularly focused on safety today. "On paper, it's the easiest stage of the week, but the riders decide how the race goes," Evenepoel told Cycling Pro.
Nevertheless, the two-time Olympic champion knows it will be a race from start to finish. Lidl-Trek will have to take control. "With the wind at our backs, I expect a fast start and a big battle for the breakaway, but a man like Jonathan Milan should be able to survive this stage. I think and hope that they will take control. Hopefully ,we'll get a sprint and get through the day safely."
