Jonas Vingegaard seized control of the Volta a Catalunya on Friday in emphatic fashion. The leader of Visma | Lease a Bike launched a devastating attack on the final climb, putting significant time into his rivals. While the Dane was exceptionally strong himself, he was also quick to highlight the flawless execution of his team throughout the day. An early breakaway of five riders went clear, including Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates). Visma | Lease a Bike had anticipated the move perfectly, with Davide Piganzoli also represented in the break. Although the young Italian was caught on the final climb, the scenario played out perfectly for the Dutch squad.
“It was actually quite a tough day,” Vingegaard said in his post-race
flash interview. “We had a plan this morning, and I didn’t feel at my very best at the start. But on the final climb, I felt really good.” He was keen to credit his teammates as well. “My teammates did an amazing job today.”
Vingegaard singled out two riders in particular. “We had Davide (Piganzoli) in the break, so we didn’t have to do any work at the front all day. Then Sepp Kuss took over, and he made the difference for me today. It was really strong teamwork,” the Dane said enthusiastically.

‘I won’t rule out going for another stage win’
The two-time Tour de France winner put such a gap into his rivals that many finished over a minute down. Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe) conceded around a minute and a half, while João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) crashed and ultimately lost nearly two minutes to the stage winner.
Even for Vingegaard, those margins came as a surprise. “To be honest, no,” he admitted when asked if he had expected such differences. “At the end, I felt really good. I’m very happy with the advantage I have after today.” Still, the Dane remained cautious about looking too far ahead. “It’s a big race. I love competing in big races and I love winning big races. That’s why I’m here.”
At the same time, he acknowledged the broader context of his season. “Of course, it’s also good preparation for what’s still to come this year.” First, however, comes the remainder of a demanding final weekend in Catalonia. “I won’t rule out going for another stage win,” Vingegaard concluded. “I need to recover and then we’ll see how I feel tomorrow. There are still many strong riders in the peloton.”
