Thibau Nys is counting down the days until he can pin on a number again in cyclo-cross. The 22-year-old Belgian from Lidl-Trek will swap his yellow, blue, and red jersey for the cyclo-cross colors of Baloise Glowi Lions this winter, with the European Championship jersey on his shoulders, of course. That Nys is almost ready for his comeback in the Koppenbergcross on November 1 was evident from some fantastic images of his training. It has been a while since we saw Nys in action in an official race. On October 31, he ended his road season in 116th place in the Bretagne Classic. The planned Canadian autumn was canceled.
Nys was exhausted and needed rest, he said. “Season after season, I was able to push myself further, until now. The non-stop switching between cyclo-cross and road racing... has taken its toll on me, haha.”
“It’s been a really long time since I’ve had more than seven days of rest, simply because I love both worlds so much,” he wrote in September. Nys took it easy and gave his body plenty of time to recover from a successful cyclo-cross and road campaign fully. After winning the European and Belgian cyclo-cross titles and five victories in total, he won the Gran Premio Miguel Indurain on the road.

Thibau Nys speaks of "the raw sound of cyclo-cross"
After a strong Ardennes spring and some setbacks due to illness leading up to the Belgian Championships, Nys made his debut in a Grand Tour in the Tour de France. He crashed in the first week and was therefore playing catch-up. After the Tour, we never really saw the best version of Nys on the road bike again. That will have to change from November 1, when Nys starts his cyclo-cross season on the Koppenberg.
In a
beautiful video of a cyclo-cross training session, Nys gave a glimpse of how he has been preparing for what is to come via his social media channels. “The raw sound of cyclo-cross,” he wrote. We see him flying over bumps, turning, jumping, sprinting, and running. Starting in November, he will be able to show off his
new slogan on his stomach: “La tête et les jambes” (read: “The head and the legs”).
