This is the page about Kaden Groves, an Australian cyclist riding for Alpecin-Deceuninck. The young sprinter made a name for himself in 2022 with a notable victory in the Vuelta a España. In 2023, he added even more wins in the Vuelta and one in the Giro d'Italia. IDLProCycling.com keeps a close eye on all news related to Groves, along with maintaining a biography of his career.
Born on December 23, 1998, Groves, like many young Australian cyclists, started in multiple disciplines. He was active on the road but also made a name for himself on the track. As a promising Australian talent, it's natural to end up with Mitchelton-BikeExchange. That's exactly what happened with Groves, who in 2018 rode for the GreenEDGE Cycling continental team. He then shifted gears, moving to SEG Racing Academy with the intention of eventually returning to his roots. This came to fruition, as Groves returned in the fall of 2019 to the team then known as Mitchelton-Scott.
After a few years of development, where he gathered podium finishes in the CRO Race, Tour de Hongrie, and the UAE Tour, 2022 was the year of Groves' breakthrough. Although he won only three times, he consistently matched the top sprinters. Moreover, those three victories were significant: a stage in the Tour of Turkey, his first WorldTour win in the Tour of Catalonia, and his first grand tour victory in the eleventh stage of the Vuelta a España.
After four years at the top level with Team BikeExchange-Jayco, it was time for a change. Groves signed a two-year deal with Alpecin-Deceuninck in August, filling the void left by Tim Merlier. Joining the Belgian squad, Groves became teammates with Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen. In his debut year with his new team, Groves quickly made an impression. He found success in both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España. The Australian sprinter claimed victory in the fifth stage of the Giro, outpacing everyone in the sprint. However, he did not start the twelfth stage, feeling unwell.
Earlier in the season, Groves had already demonstrated his speed. He won two stages in the Tour of Catalonia and was also the fastest in the Volta Limburg Classic. Yet, the highlight of his season came in the Vuelta a España. There, he won three sprint stages, including the final stage in Madrid. These victories also earned him the points classification jersey. In 2024, Groves will continue with the Belgian team and is likely to compete with Jasper Philipsen for a spot in the Tour de France.
