Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates-XRG) started Tuesday's Tour of Burgos as the top favorites, but suffered a setback on day one. Both riders crashed in the final kilometer, although the damage appears to be relatively minor. Del Toro attacked in the final phase with Ciccone on his wheel, but slipped in a corner. The Italian, who won the Clasica San Sebastian on Saturday, was unable to avoid the crash.
Ciccone rode over the arms of the falling Del Toro and apologized for this on Instagram. “I regret the contact with Isaac's arms, but unfortunately, it was impossible to avoid. I hope he is okay.” UAE Emirates and Del Toro himself have not yet commented on any injuries.
Del Toro eventually finished eleven seconds behind stage winner Roger Adria of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, while Ciccone crossed the finish line in 81st place, almost a minute and a half behind.
