🎥 Remco Evenepoel screams at rivals during the Montreal Grand Prix

After his victory in the GP Quebec on Friday, Remco Evenepoel was considered the top favorite for the GP Montreal on Sunday. However, the Belgian rider from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe didn’t have a great day and had to settle for fifth place in the dress rehearsal for the World Cycling Championships. There was also a notable moment during the race.

On the penultimate climb up Mont Royal—the traditional decider of both the Montreal Grand Prix and the World Championships—Lidl-Trek took the lead. As soon as Toms Skujins had finished his turn at the front, the Latvian dropped back to the right side of the road.

At that very moment, Quinn Simmons from that same team launched an attack, while Evenepoel was right behind Skujins, who was dropping back. The Belgian had to ease off the gas for a moment and made that clear to Skujins with both words and gestures, to which Skujins also reacted. The experienced Skujins didn’t seem immediately impressed by this.

In the end, Evenepoel was unable to keep up with Paul Seixas and Isaac del Toro on the final climb up Mont Royal, even though he had managed to turn things around on the flat section one lap earlier. Evenepoel ultimately crossed the finish line in Montreal in fifth place.

Remco Evenepoel won the GP Québec, shaping the finale and outsprinting Giulio Ciccone, who had sat on his wheel in the closing kilometres. Despite not feeling great early on, Evenepoel grew into the race, attacked with a five-man move 28 km from the finish, and did much of the work as several favourites missed the split.

Unable to drop his rivals on the final climb, he trusted his sprint and led it out into a headwind, holding off Ciccone. He highlighted his team’s strong support, noted the challenge of returning to racing, and looks ahead to GP Montréal and the World Championships in the coming weeks. Read more
