Today marks the day of the European Women’s Cycling Championships, but also… the women's Giro dell’Emilia. One of the most beautiful autumn classics, and on the same day as a continental championship: something you would only see in cycling. For the men, it would be virtually impossible to race both the
Giro dell’Emilia and the
European Road Championships in Slovenia. For the women, it would have involved being in two places at the same time.
Therefore the start line for the 1.Pro race in Bologna lacked big names like Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini, and so many others.
The riders who were there covered 111km of racing, finishing at the iconic San Luca. This climb is 2.1 kilometres with an average gradient of 9.4 percent. Certain sections have gradients of well over 10 percent.
No information from Italy until winner announced
The coverage from Italy left much to be desired. There was no available TV footage, leaving plenty of room for improvement in terms of professionalism. It wasn’t until the finish that any news came from Italy: Alessia Vigilia of Uno-X claimed victory on the San Luca climb, succeeding Kim Le Court-Pienaar on the list of winners.
Solo effort wins the day
Vigilia, of Uno-X Mobility won with a long-range solo attack, as reported by
Pro Cycling UK. She went solo with around 30km of racing left, and held her lead across the final two ascents of San Luca.
The Italian then completed the last climb alone to take the biggest victory of her career in Bologna.
Sarah Van Dam, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider finished second with Scottish rider Lauren Dickson completing the podium for FDJ United-SUEZ.
