Ben Tulett takes Clásica San Sebastián podium as Louis Barré boosts Visma

Remco Evenepoel claimed a record fourth victory for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe in Saturday’s Clásica San Sebastián. Alongside the Belgian, Visma | Lease a Bike also made a major impression in the Basque Classic and was rewarded with third place through Ben Tulett. Several of the team’s other riders also showed themselves at the front of the race.

Tim Rex joined the day’s breakaway during the opening phase, before Bart Lemmen took over the attacking duties in the run-up to the finale. Visma | Lease a Bike eventually had three riders remaining in the group of around 20 contenders that fought out the closing stages.

Louis Barré endured a difficult start with the team because of illness after making his winter transfer, but the Frenchman demonstrated his quality in the Basque Country on Saturday. It was the first time Barré, whose season did not begin until May, had been able to show himself at the highest level in 2026.

“It was great to see that Louis had really strong legs today and anticipated the race,” Tulett said after the finish, reflecting on his teammate’s aggressive performance.

Barré attacked before the riders reached the Erlaitz and crossed the summit in fourth position. He was eventually caught shortly before the finish by the chasing group containing Tulett, who finished third, and Tour de France returnee Matteo Jorgenson, who took 12th. Barré crossed the line in 19th place, but his performance could provide an important confidence boost after a disrupted first half of the season. “Matteo also came out of the Tour de France in good shape, so I think we can be very pleased with our performance today,” Tulett added in the team’s official race report.

“We came here with a really strong team, and after a long build-up period I was curious to see how my body would respond today. I think we got a good confirmation,” said Tulett, who is now scheduled to ride the Vuelta a Burgos and the Vuelta a España.

After also finishing third at La Flèche Wallonne and Eschborn-Frankfurt, the Brit has now reached a WorldTour podium for the third time this season. “It’s a one-day WorldTour Classic, so of course we always want to fight for the best possible result. Today, I think we achieved the best result that was possible with third place,” Tulett concluded.
