Demi Vollering and her FDJ-SUEZ team were forced to leave Mount Teide in a hurry after local authorities warned them about an approaching storm in Tenerife. The Dutch rider had already been training at altitude after Strade Bianche, but what looked like a routine end to the camp quickly turned into an urgent departure.

Vollering had indicated earlier on Tuesday that her time on Tenerife was more or less over. In a video posted on Instagram, she wrote that “the final efforts are done,” while dark grey skies in the distance already suggested the weather was about to turn. Back at the team hotel, it became clear that the authorities had seen the same forecast and were taking no chances. The message was direct: the team had to leave immediately because another storm was on the way and the roads had been closed.

Remco Evenepoel - and no doubt Vollering - was snowed in on the Teide

Vollering avoids an Evenepoel scenario

The warning came only days after Remco Evenepoel experienced first-hand how quickly conditions can deteriorate on Teide. The Belgian rider had been snowed in during his own altitude camp and was briefly stranded on the mountain before eventually being escorted back down by police.

Vollering, by contrast, made it safely back to the valley without further problems, even if the sudden exit felt unusual. “Bye Teide, strange to leave you like this,” she wrote. Weather conditions in Tenerife have been unsettled for some time, forcing cycling teams on more than one occasion to search for better conditions elsewhere on the island.
In sporting terms, Vollering now appears ready for a new block of racing. She is set to return to action on 1 April at Dwars door Vlaanderen, followed by the Tour of Flanders. After that, her focus shifts to the familiar Ardennes triple header, with the Giro Donne also on her schedule later in the season. Vollering’s 2026 programme had already been reshaped earlier this year, with a sharper spring focus than in previous seasons.
