On Saturday, Paul Seixas became the youngest cyclist ever to win the men’s Tour of Lombardy, but there is still no women’s edition of the 'Race of the Falling Leaves'. Earlier this year, Demi Vollering called for a women’s Il Lombardia to be organised as soon as possible, but what’s the status of that? Demi Volleing called out the UCI about a women's Lombardy
In February, Vollering cleverly responded to a call from the
UCI. The global cycling federation is in the process of reforming the cycling calendar and everything that goes along with it, and gave all stakeholders the opportunity to raise potential issues.
The Dutch rider from FDJ-Suez was exploring the roads around Lake Como at the time. “And now I really want a women’s
Tour of Lombardy,” she said that same day. “Consider this my first response to your letter, David Lappartient,”
she remarked slyly.Demi Vollering at Lake Como.
No women's Tour of Lombardy in 2027
Eight months later, Vollering’s season was already over before the men's Tour of Lombardy took place. Vollering won both the European Championships and the World Championships in recent weeks, but Lombardy is not open to her.
Next year, maybe? Well, the
2027 cycling calendar has already been released, and the Tour of Lombardy for women is still not present.
RCS claims to be in the process of organising a women's Il Lombardia
According to the RCS, they are currently working on organising a women's Tour of Lombardy, with the aim of introducing the five Monuments to women’s cycling as well. In recent years, Milan-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix have also been added.
The fact that Luca Guercilena, who led the Lidl-Trek men’s and women’s teams for many years, has taken over from the somewhat more conservative Mauro Vegni is, in that regard, already a step in the right direction.
Luca Guercilena has taken over as head of RCS.
RCS still faces obstacles on the road to as women's Il Lombardia
However, the Italian organisation notes that there are still obstacles to overcome. RCS is aiming for an edition similar to the men’s race, which is set to launch in 2028 at the earliest. “But it’s not easy,” they told
Cyclingnews."The roads in Lombardy are very busy on Saturdays, and we're already facing the challenge of getting approval for the men's race. We'd have to arrange for additional road closures with the local authorities and the police, and that's never easy."
"We know there should be a women's Il Lombardia; it's the only Monument without a women's race. However, it's important that the race be sustainable in the long term," the organisers explain.
