In the Tour of Switzerland, there was a moment of shock when Geraint Thomas suddenly hit the ground in the third stage. The British rider from INEOS Grenadiers managed to finish the stage after a crash, but a day later, he disappeared from the Swiss stage race. It was a scary moment ahead of his last Tour de France, so an update from Thomas himself a week after his crash was very welcome. On Wednesday, the British rider provided another update, indicating that things are looking good for his participation in the Tour.
It has been just over two weeks since we suddenly saw Thomas sitting on the ground in stage three of the Tour of Switzerland. The peloton had to brake hard for a left-hand corner, where the British rider hit the asphalt at what appeared to be low speed. After spending a long time on the ground and visiting the medical car, Thomas continued on his way and eventually finished 133rd in Heiden.
“I crashed, of course, but I'm not 100% sure how it happened,” the experienced rider said a week later on the Watts Occuring podcast. “I hit my knee, which wasn't too bad, but my foot got caught behind me almost as badly, and I twisted my knee and hamstring. My leg was just completely numb, and the doctors tried to get me into the ambulance.”

Thomas gives update ahead of Tour de France: "I just hate rehab"

Still, Thomas refused to give up. "I thought: no, no, no, I just have to sit it out.’ However, the next morning, it was decided that Thomas would not continue. “There was some back and forth, and then the doctor said, ‘We don't want to take any chances. You're better off taking a few days off to make sure it's 100%, then you can get back to training and be ready for the Tour.’ So that's what we did, instead of fighting and maybe making it worse or overcompensating.”
So, good news for the Tour, as participation in his last Tour de France did not seem to be in jeopardy. “I've had a few quiet days. I've been to the physio and, to be honest, that's the worst thing for me. I just hate rehab; it drives me crazy. I've never been a fan of it; I've always struggled with it. I've done it, but as soon as I'm better, I'm back on the bike for six hours,” Thomas concluded last week.

New post on Instagram appears to confirm Tour participation Thomas

With 22 of the 23 teams having already announced their selections for the Tour, INEOS Grenadiers remains silent. This has led to much speculation about the eight riders who will travel to Lille with the British team. However, a post on Instagram seems to confirm Thomas' participation in what would be his last Tour. “The final pre-Tour chop,” the rider captioned a selfie with his wife.
