It came three days after EF confirmed that Matt White would join as a sports director. The team has not given a reason, but the timing points to more than one coach leaving.

EF said goodbye with a farewell video on Instagram. "Thank you for the incredible ride," the team wrote. Cyclingnews reports that Wegelius will leave at the end of the year and that he has not yet commented on why he is going.

EF Education Easypost has changed a lot of personnel in 2026.
From domestique to head of the team car
Wegelius was born in Finland and grew up in Great Britain. He spent more than a decade as a professional rider, then joined what was then Garmin-Sharp as a sports director in 2012. He was promoted to head sports director in 2018.
He never won a race as a rider, although he came close with several podium finishes. His life as a helper is the subject of his book Domestique, which he wrote with Tom Southam. Southam is now a sports director at EF himself.

Wegelius was still recruiting riders only weeks ago. When Tao Geoghegan Hart signed for 2027, he said he had told Wegelius what he loves about cycling:
"When I spoke to head sports director Charly Wegelius a few weeks ago I said one thing I really love about cycling is the feeling of turning up to a race hotel with fire in your belly," the Londoner told the Hackney Gazette.

Matt White replaces Wegelius at EF Education
White's return was announced on October 28 after the Australian left Movistar after a single season. He began his DS career at the American team in 2008 and was dismissed in 2010 for breaching team policy.
When the signing was announced, White was named as part of a directing staff that still included Wegelius, Ken Vanmarcke and Southam.
Reports now differ on what happens to the top job. Cyclingnews says it is not yet clear who will become head sports director. Poland's Naszosie, however, reports that White is returning in exactly that role.

Carapaz took EF to the 2026 Tour de France polka- dot jersey
Vaughters: 'We needed to make some hard decisions'
The change comes as EF prepare for 2027 with about 15 percent less money. According to Domestique, the cut follows Oatly's exit as co-sponsor of the women's team, which shares a budget with the men's squad, as well as rising costs.
The shortfall is why Richard Carapaz was allowed to leave for NSN a year before his contract ran out.
It was a little bit of a sad situation where our economic resources were stretched to the point that we needed to make some hard decisions.- Jonathan Vaughters
It has not been confirmed that Wegelius's departure is to do with the budget. But with Carapaz leaving, White arriving and the head of the team car departing, EF's 2027 set-up looks very different from the one Vaughters has relied on for most of the past decade.
