On Friday, Mathieu van der Poel will line up for his fourth Tour de France. Naturally, in the build-up to Le Grand Départ, much of the focus is on the opening week — a stretch in which the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider is tipped for stage wins and even a potential stint in the yellow jersey. But while the Dutchman sharpens his form, he’s also found himself in the middle of a growing controversy over his new partnership with a private jet company.
Van der Poel’s use of private jets is nothing new. Back in December, for example, he flew to Besançon just two days after winning a cyclo-cross World Cup round in Loenhout, Belgium — and then won again in France. “A day of rest and we go again,” he said at the time. Given that history, the move to become an ambassador for Belgian airline FLYINGGROUP didn’t come as a huge surprise.

Van der Poel responds to criticism: 'Understand the concerns'

The announcement, however, sparked significant backlash. While some fans supported the move, many voiced their disapproval across social media, prompting Van der Poel to issue a personal response.
“I understand the concerns about the environment, and I respect everyone’s opinion,” he wrote in a comment under the announcement post. “At the same time, the way I travel is incredibly important for my sport and my career. I work extremely hard every day to perform at the highest level, and that means I have to make decisions that protect my time, health, and mental state. Flying relaxed helps me stay focused and healthy because I experience less stress.”
In other words, the decision to fly privately is — in Van der Poel’s view — a performance-driven one. He also dismissed suggestions that the partnership was purely financially motivated.
“This partnership isn’t about luxury. It’s about performing, recovering, and having support that helps me give 100% when I need to race,” he explained. “I try to make responsible choices where I can, but I stand by my commitment to my goals.”
