Great Britain has much more to offer at the World Cycling Championships than just Tom Pidcock

Pidcock as Great Britain’s team leader—that’s no surprise. The 9th place finisher in the Tour de France recently became the world mountain bike champion, and when he switched from mountain biking to road racing, he immediately won the GP Industria & Artigianato. He then headed to Canada for the GP Québec and GP Montréal.

In Canada, Pidcock was among the best, but he was still missing something to truly contend for the win. He finished fourth in Québec and, two days later, sixth in Montréal, where the World Championships will also be held on September 27.

Pidcock believes he can win a world title, though he didn't name himself the top favourite after Montreal. To boost his chances, he will be supported later this month by Oscar Onley, Finlay Pickering, Adam Yates, Fred Wright, Mark Donovan, James Shaw, Callum Thornley, and Ethan Hayter.

Thornley and Hayter will also compete in the individual time trial. The young Thornley of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe made an impression in the Vuelta a España by finishing second in the 32-kilometer time trial on Stage 18. Hayter finished ninth overall but came in second in the Vuelta’s opening time trial.

Onley finished sixth in the Vuelta a España and can therefore be seen as a dangerous dark horse in Montréal. The same certainly applies to Adam Yates, who even won the GP Montréal in 2023. National team coach Stephen Park is already looking forward to it. “This team represents the very best that British cycling has to offer, at a time when British riders are making their mark on the top podium like never before.”
