Isaac Del Toro was crowned Mexican road champion this weekend. The 21-year-old cycling sensation from UAE Emirates-XRG maintained his composure for a long time in a group of five. In the end, he overtook the brave Eder Frayre and went on to win solo in front of his home crowd in Ensenada.
It was a natural progression for Del Toro to become the Mexican champion. The rising star was the only WorldTour rider at the start, and the championship was even moved to October, especially for him, and organized in his hometown of Ensenada. The fact that he rode in a group of five for a long time and then took Frayre with him for a long time was more for show.
In the final, Del Toro put his foot down before riding solo to the finish. “It was a pleasure to win here and share it with all the people from my hometown,” said Del Toro afterward. “I think I knew 98 percent of the people along the side of the road, and that felt great. It was quite a tough race because of the wind, but I'm happy with the victory.”

Del Toro was cheering for his girlfriend the day before

The days in Mexico turned out to be one big party for Del Toro, who coincidentally won two Mexican titles in the time trial and road race. In between, he took the time on Friday during his training session, dressed entirely in UAE cycling gear, to cheer on his girlfriend Romina Hinojosa in the women's race. Del Toro's partner finished second in a sprint, but it wasn't for lack of support.
Del Toro himself also thoroughly enjoyed the packed streets in his own road race on Saturday. Once he was riding alone, he greeted almost everyone on the side of the road with a high five. He waved, smiled, and there was great joy at the finish line. “I hope that cycling continues to grow in Mexico. That takes time, but a lot of positive things are happening and I hope I can help.”

Del Toro achieved 18 victories in 2025

Del Toro had already proven himself the strongest earlier this week in the time trial in Mexico, where the national championship was deliberately organized in October to welcome the great cycling hero. Because the UCI cycling season ended on October 19, we are awarding Del Toro the two national titles in his own country for 2026.
This ended the climber's brilliant season, which included 18 victories, 16 of which were officially recorded in 2025. The other two will be carried over to 2026, the year in which Del Toro will also be allowed to wear the Mexican champion's jersey, whether it will be obvious remains to be seen. UAE Emirates-XRG is not usually a team that designs beautiful, eye-catching champion's jerseys.
