Tobias Lund Andresen was perhaps a somewhat surprising winner of Stage 1 at the Tour Down Under — but the 23-year-old Dane might disagree with that description. After narrowly outpacing Matthew Brennan and Sam Welsford in a photo finish, Lund Andresen raised his arms in delight at the line, his joy unmistakable.

This winter, the sprinter chose to leave Picnic PostNL, where he had broken through and begun winning races in recent seasons. He came up through their development squad and really hit his stride in 2024 with multiple stage victories in Turkey, Croatia and Denmark. In 2025 he started well with a win at the Surf Coast Classic in Australia, but then his momentum stalled.
Decathlon CMA CGM saw his potential and lured him to the French team with a three-year contract. On paper he was brought in to be part of the lead-out for Olav Kooij, but in practice the Dane claimed his own success on Day 2 of the Tour Down Under. The lead-out was impressive, and Lund Andresen delivered in a thrilling sprint finish.

In his first post-race interview, Lund Andresen was clearly still buzzing with excitement. He crossed the line cheering loudly and maintained that enthusiasm when speaking to the media. “This feels incredible; I can’t remember the last time I felt like this. Unbelievable — with a new team and the bike is so fast!” Lund Andresen said.
He also praised his new teammates. “They did an incredible job, and with all the confidence from management. They were sending emails before this race, reinforcing our goals for the year and how important teamwork is — and we showed that today.”
Everyone was dialled in, which allowed Lund Andresen to enjoy the finale, he admitted. “You have to be a bit stupid to be a sprinter and to enjoy a finish like that, but our plan was just so good and we did exactly what we wanted and what we were prepared for. That doesn’t happen often, but today it did.”
