Stage 1 of the Tour of Valencia looked fairly straightforward on paper, but it still delivered a lively finale. As the peloton split in the run-in to the key point of the stage, a crash occurred out of camera view — and it has since become clear that Mads Pedersen was among those brought down. The Lidl-Trek rider was forced to abandon, making it a frustrating start to his 2026 campaign. Mads Pedersen suffered a fracture of the left wrist and right collarbone in the crash on day one at Volta Comunitat Valenciana, which will be operated on tomorrow.
The Team’s first priority is to ensure Mads gets the best care possible & the immediate focus will be on a successful recovery to minimise the disruption to his season goals. Lidl-Trek will announce his return to racing in due course & will share any further updates only if necessary.
'This is not how anyone wants to see Pedersen start his 2026 season,' Lidl-Trek announced via

Bauke Mollema, who is set to retire after this season, reacted on Instagram. “One of those days I won’t miss when I’m done. A fresh and nervous peloton, and then a big high-speed crash just before the final climb — with Pedersen involved. Get well soon, boys.”
More messages of support followed from within the team. Steven de Jongh wrote on Instagram: “Terrible to see Pedersen crash out. Get well soon, Mads.” Tao Geoghegan Hart added: “Awful for you, Mads. Get well soon, boss.”
