With two mountain stages still to go,
Afonso Eulálio is still holding firm near the top of the Giro d'Italia
general classification. The Portuguese rider finished just outside the top ten on Carì and remains fifth overall. He also still holds the white jersey. With
Giulio Pellizzari having abandoned the GC battle, can he suddenly dream of winning the young rider classification?
Eulálio lost just over three minutes to stage winner Jonas Vingegaard, but kept his losses to rivals limited. The white jersey wearer
crossed the line in 11th place, notably alongside Wout Poels, the oldest rider in the race. "Another day in the white jersey — that is super important for us," Eulálio tells his
team's website. "It gives me something extra, more strength to keep fighting every day".
With a fifth place overall, Eulálio is still in good shape. More important is the white jersey. There, the 24-year-old suffered a windfall. Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe)
dropped out of the classification. He was the Portuguese's biggest challenger for the youth classification, but now the competition comes from other riders.
Mathys Rondel (Tudor) needs to make up more than four minutes, but it is mainly Davide Piganzoli (Visma | Lease a Bike) who is a danger, at 2.17 minutes. 'Pellizzari didn't have his best day, but Piganzoli and the other guys are closing in and
riding very strong. I hope I can continue with good legs. We have five days to go, and we'll keep fighting.'
