Tadej Pogačar's 2027 schedule is shaping up and it is mega: Tour de France #6, 'Super Worlds', and unfinished business in Spain

The 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships will take place in Haute-Savoie, France, from August 24 to September 5, bringing together more than 15,000 athletes across 20 World Championships. The men's Elite road race is scheduled for August 29 in Sallanches-Domancy, on a course that will include the mythical Domancy climb, the scene of Bernard Hinault's world title win in 1980.

The riders will have to conquer the famous Côte de Domancy several times on the short circuit, a 2.5-kilometre hill with an average gradient of 9.4% and peaks of up to 16%. The circuit measures 13.3 km per lap, and the road up the climb has been renamed Route Bernard Hinault. For a punchy climber like Pogačar, who would have been Slovenia's headliner at the European Championships this October, a course this steep and explosive looks like it could be tailor-made for him.

Here is where the 2027 calendar gets truly complicated. The 2027 Vuelta will start on the later date of September 4 in order to avoid a clash with the Super World Championships, with the race set to finish in Madrid on September 26. The Grand Départ will take place in Santiago de Compostela, the race returning to Spanish roads after three foreign starts, with the announcement made before the final stage of the 2026 race.

That leaves Pogačar just six days between the men's Elite road race in Sallanches on August 29 and the opening stage in Galicia. According to Velo, preparing for the Vuelta could dovetail nicely with a likely return to the road worlds, but fitting both into such a narrow window will demand careful planning from UAE. Paris-Roubaix will also remain a major objective in 2027.

Gianetti said Pogačar has now accepted the setback and turned his attention towards 2027. "The disappointment of not being able to race is obviously huge, but this is part of sport," he said. "He also knows the crash could have had even worse consequences. He will approach next season with great motivation."

Before the Worlds and the Vuelta, there is the small matter of the Tour de France. The 2027 men's race will begin on Friday, July 2, with a Grand Départ from Edinburgh, and Pogačar will be chasing a sixth title that would break the all-time record.

He won the general classification for the fifth time this July, with a final margin of almost six and a half minutes. After equalling the record of Merckx, Hinault, Indurain and Anquetil, he joked to Eurosport: "I don't like clubbing, so let's try to get out of this club..."

But the younger generation is not planning to wait for Pogačar to tick every box. A younger rider like del Toro, 22, or 19-year-old Frenchman Paul Seixas, fourth in his Tour debut, could close the gap. At the Vuelta, 20-year-old Slovenian stage winner Jakob Omrzel "surprised everyone, including his employers, with that explosive performance," according to the Slovenian national coach. At 27, turning 28 this month, Pogačar is not going to wait around, and the rise of Seixas, del Toro, and Omrzel proves new rivals are never far away.

"I definitely will not be doing this for too much long time, I think," Pogačar told TNT Sports after Stage 20 of the Tour. But his actions tell a different story: Pogačar recently extended his contract with UAE Emirates-XRG through 2032. The Vuelta crash may have stolen the final weeks of 2026, but 2027 could be the most defining season of his already remarkable career. A sixth Tour, a potential third world title on a course built for climbers, and a first Vuelta victory: all within the space of three months.
