Danny van Poppel won the fifth and final stage of the Tour of Holland. The Dutch race faced a disqualification, a canceled stage, shortened routes, and more in its first edition, but on the final day around Arnhem, we were treated to an excellent race. It was spectacular all day, with Van Poppel staying ahead of a group of three and winning. Christophe Laporte was the overall winner for Visma | Lease a Bike.
The final stage was 156 kilometers long, with 11 local laps up and down a small hill towards Burgers Zoo, among other things. The closed circuit offered plenty of room for racing, so all kinds of riders seized their chance. It resulted in a blistering pace, which made it very difficult to make a difference. And so, after one hour of racing, we still had no breakaway.
When we still saw one attack after another after 60 kilometers, a group of four finally broke away. Theodor August Clemmensen and Frederik Frison joined Dutchmen Huub Artz and Rik van der Wal. Soudal-Quick Step was one of the teams chasing, and eventually the whole pack broke apart.

Laporte makes his move, but Van Poppel's breakaway remains ahead

With 80 kilometers to go, the front peloton consisted of about thirty riders, and that group quickly caught up with the remaining leaders. Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe was a team that had not missed the move, with Jan Tratnik trying to ride away solo. Davide Ballerini and Martijn Rasenberg joined him, and for a moment, we had a new leading group. However, they did not make it either.
When everything came back together, new riders broke away in the last 40 kilometers. Artz was back with them, and this time he had the strong Cameron Rogers and Alec Segaert with him. Visma | Lease a Bike tried to keep things under control for Laporte, and with two local laps to go, everything looked good for the Frenchman.
At the start of the final lap, it was Danny van Poppel who stepped on the pedals for Red Bull, and the Dutchman made the crossing to the leading group of three. It was touch and go whether they would make it, with even Laporte himself doing a turn at the front of the peloton for a sprint. It turned out to be too late, because without Rogers, the other three made it, and Van Poppel won.
