Jonas Vingegaard came to the Tour de France with lots of ambition. The Dane felt better than ever and was eager to claim his third Tour victory. It was not meant to be: the leader of Visma | Lease a Bike will start the final stage to Paris in second place in the GC. After that, he will set his sights on the Vuelta a España, he said.
The idea that Vingegaard would participate in the Vuelta arose before the turn of the year. The possibility had been there for some time, although the 2022 and 2023 Tour winner did not want to confirm anything yet. He has participated in the Vuelta a España once before, in 2023, when he finished second, behind his teammate Sepp Kuss and ahead of his teammate Primoz Roglic. The desire for more remained after his good performances.
Then he had to recover well from the Tour de France if he wanted to be at the start in Turin. It was three grueling weeks, but the Dane, who finished more than four minutes behind rival Tadej Pogacar, came through La Grande Boucle relatively well. “I’m feeling much better than last year,” he told L'Équipe, among others. “Last year, I was completely exhausted after the Tour. Now it's much better.”

New duel with Pogacar?

And so he can set his sights on the Vuelta. He has confirmed that he will be participating for the second time. “First, I'll take a week's rest, but I can't wait for the Vuelta to start.” Pogacar also hinted at the idea of the Vuelta: on the rest day, he discussed the possibility, but he wanted to wait until after the finish in Paris to make a decision. If he does start there, we could well see another battle between three riders, with Remco Evenepoel also potentially lining up in Italy.
