Zonneveld feels sorry for Almeida after yet another UAE victory: "So far this has cost them the Vuelta"

After a grueling weekend in northern Spain, not much has changed between Jonas Vingegaard and João Almeida in the general classification of the Vuelta a España. It could still go either way, but the scales currently tip in favor of the Dane. And that’s partly thanks to UAE Team Emirates-XRG, as Thijs Zonneveld explains in his podcast In Het Wiel.

The team claimed their seventh stage win on La Farrapona with Marc Soler. It’s yet another instance of the team sending someone up the road. “I do think Soler is a better teammate than Ayuso, I don’t want to paint them with the same brush,” says Zonneveld. “But this is classic UAE again. ‘We’re not going to go in the break,’ they said. And then they have two guys in the breakaway and go all in for the stage win.”
That same Soler was still grinding and 'suffering' on the penultimate climb before launching an attack at the base of the final ascent. “Titi (Thomas, ed.) Voeckler built an entire career on this, right? There are riders who are really good at it, Bauke Mollema, for example. But this was done so demonstratively that no one was fooled. Still, he was going so fast that no one could follow him.”

"This could have been the day Almeida dropped Vingegaard"

The stage win was a nice bonus for UAE, but Zonneveld believes the team could have gotten much more out of the day with their leader Almeida. “If you saw how Vingegaard was suffering in the last 2 kilometers, and how much trouble he had battling the headwind just to sprint around Almeida, then this could have been the day where Almeida might have dropped Vingegaard.”

UAE has been torn between two strategies throughout the entire Vuelta. “They haven’t used that full train for Almeida even once, and I think he really needs it. And when I see him over the last two days, I honestly think he might actually be better than Vingegaard when it comes to long efforts. So they haven’t fully taken advantage of these opportunities, especially not today.”
“Vingegaard doesn’t have the freshness, or the fitness either. Which makes sense, because he rode the Tour, and it was such a brutally hard edition that even the best cyclist in the world said: ‘I have no desire to race for a while.’ Vingegaard went home briefly and then straight to the Vuelta, while Almeida had time to prepare at altitude.”

UAE hasn't fully backed Almeida: "So far it has cost them the Vuelta"

To beat Vingegaard, Almeida needs to apply a Visma | Lease a Bike-style strategy, says the sports director of BEAT Cycling. “He needs to use the same tactic Vingegaard used against Pogacar: wear him down and decide the race on the climbs. That’s what UAE is starting to do more and more, but they’re not doing it with the whole team.”
Zonneveld says it pains him to watch how UAE Team Emirates is treating their leader. According to him, the situation could have looked very different by now. “So far, it’s cost them the Vuelta, you can put it that simply. And Almeida has lost three-quarters of his time because his team, and he himself, weren’t paying close enough attention. The margins between these two guys are razor-thin.”
