It is a well-known fact that Mathieu van der Poel is an avid car enthusiast. The Dutch superstar has often arrived at recent cyclo-cross races in a sleek Lamborghini model, and people often wondered which type he would show up in next. In Hamme, Eli Iserbyt also turned up to the cyclo-cross event in an impressive car, much to the delight of Van der Poel.
Before the race in East Flanders, the topic comes up. Iserbyt parked a flashy Porsche next to his camper and was asked about it during a pre-race press moment. "The good people at AEcars have given me something really cool," he tells the press, including IDLProCycling.com, about the sports car. "In Hoogerheide, it will probably be something different again. Things like that make this week super fun. I'm really going to enjoy it, because next week it's back to reality. For now, I can't keep the Porsche. But if I drive it properly, who knows, haha!" the affable West-Flemish riders says, triggering laughs from the crowd.
When shortly afterward Van der Poel is asked what he thinks about his Flemish competitor now also arriving at the cyclocross in a beautiful car, he responds enthusiastically. "It's indeed a very fun trend, and as a car enthusiast, I can certainly appreciate it," says the world champion. That it's a trend seems almost an understatement. For instance, Tom Pidcock also arrived in a Porsche at Benidorm.
