Pello Bilbao, born in 1990 in the Basque town of Guernica, started his WorldTour career with the Basque team Euskaltel-Euskadi. After this team left the peloton at the end of 2013, he continued his career at Caja-Rujal, where he developed into a puncher, excelling in hilly races with a strong finish. Bilbao achieved notable results, especially in his home country.

His impressive performances caught the attention of Astana, who signed him at the end of 2016. With Astana, Bilbao gradually transitioned from a puncher to a stage race cyclist.
