AI usage in professional cycling training is not new

AI is no longer a new tool in cycling, with several partnerships already in place. Netcompany INEOS and AiRo are a new example of this, driven by the desire to push the boundaries of technology and equipment.
The collaboration between the two parties is still in its early stages, but by 2027, AiRo is expected to play a key role in testing the aerodynamics of the equipment and the riders, using AI.

The founder of the AI tool has already proven himself at the Olympic Games

Using a CFD simulation tool called Vayu, Netcompany hopes to help INEOS take another step forward in aerodynamics. However, AiRo’s services won’t be limited to the British cycling team. Anyone who pays can also arrange their own bike fitting using Vayu.
Vayu has only been around for 14 months, and reportedly, more WorldTour teams are using the tool. It is therefore not yet entirely clear what advantages Netcompany INEOS will gain from a partnership compared to the competition.
The fact is that AiRo founder Ingmar Jungnickel has earned his stripes by successfully leading a similar project with the German team at the Olympic Games and by helping develop several Specialized bicycles. He was also involved with the U.S. speed skating team.

AI is partially replacing wind tunnel testing

What exactly can AiRo’s Vayu do? According to Cyclingnews, which was given a 'tour' of the app, the tool can simulate a rider in great detail, allowing AI to determine the optimal position on the bike.
In addition to road cycling, this also applies to gravel, mountain bike, and time trial riders.

The tool could significantly reduce the need for wind tunnel testing, since you can test the AI model in a 3D environment in all positions and with all kinds of helmets to achieve the best results. You can also fully customise your position on the bike.
