While many riders are gearing up for a big day of racing on the Italian coast at Milan-Sanremo, others have used the same period for a final training block. That also applies to Remco Evenepoel, who headed to altitude ahead of his planned appearance at the Volta a Catalunya. But the weather now appears to be putting that participation at risk.

Evenepoel began his season in Spain and immediately made an impression, taking three straight victories in Mallorca. He then followed that up with two stage wins and the overall title at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana before lining up at the UAE Tour. Although he won the time trial there, he struggled in the mountains and eventually finished tenth overall for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, with the Belgian still searching for the cause of that below-par showing.

After that WorldTour outing, it was time for another block away from racing. Evenepoel had been due to stay out of competition for more than a month, and recently travelled to Tenerife for an altitude camp. Around Mount Teide, the reigning world time trial champion has been preparing for his next set of race days, due to begin with the Volta a Catalunya, which starts on 23 March. That race forms an important step in his build-up to the Ardennes Classics, where the Belgian is expected to ride all three major events.
But his Catalunya start now appears to be hanging in the balance. The weather on Tenerife has turned severe in recent days, with heavy snowfall affecting the island. The conditions were also visible on Evenepoel’s Instagram.

Evenepoel stuck in Tenerife, Barcelona trip in doubt

He is stranded on the Spanish island with his girlfriend Oumi. “We’ve been stuck here for the second day in a row because of the snow,” Evenepoel explains. “No one is allowed to go up or down. We were supposed to fly to Barcelona tomorrow for the race, but I'm not sure if we'll make it. Does anyone know a way to get to the airport?”
It would be a major setback for Evenepoel, but also for the Tour of Catalonia. It would have been the first meeting of the season between the Belgian and Jonas Vingegaard, and João Almeida, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Enric Mas, Oscar Onley, Egan Bernal, Derek Gee-West, and Richard Carapaz are also on the start list. So whether we’ll see the battle between Evenepoel and Vingegaard remains to be seen.

Incidentally, Evenepoel isn’t the only one stuck on Tenerife. Visma | Lease a Bike climber Jørgen Nordhagen is also on the island and would normally be starting on Monday as well.
