To compile this list, (former) editors at IDLProCycling.com were asked for their top ten in response to the question: "Who is most likely to win the Giro d'Italia?" Each top ten was assigned points: 12 points for first place, 10 for second place, and then 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively. The total points received for each rider were converted into a percentage of the maximum points possible. This percentage is indicated next to each rider. This helps give a clearer view of how the odds stack up according to IDLProCycling.com!
10. Simon Yates - Visma | Lease a Bike
Number ten on our list is the winner of the most recent Giro d'Italia:
Simon Yates. The British rider took the pink jersey with a coup on the Finestre, making his first six months with Visma | Lease a Bike immediately successful. In July, however, he will take on the role his brother Adam has with UAE Emirates-XRG: super-domestique or outsider.
Yates can be used to put pressure on the other teams and thus achieve a high ranking. He finished fourth in the Tour two years ago, behind Vingegaard, Pogacar, and his brother Adam.
9. Carlos Rodriguez - INEOS Grenadiers
INEOS Grenadiers will start the Tour de France without an absolute top favorite for the GC. Spaniard
Carlos Rodriguez is the leader of the British team. In 2023, he rode an excellent first Tour, finishing fifth overall at 22 and winning a stage.
Last season, the climber finished in seventh place, and Rodriguez seems to be returning to shape in time for 2025. He had a rough start to the year due to a broken collarbone in the UAE Tour but has since finished sixth in the Tour de Romandie and ninth in the Critérium du Dauphiné.
8. Enric Mas - Movistar
Enric Mas, the Spanish Movistar team's leader for many years, is in eighth place. However, the man from Mallorca has not had a good season in the Tour in recent years. In both 2022 and 2023, Mas had to leave the race early, while last year, he was never in contention for a good classification and eventually finished nineteenth.
As consistent as he is in the Vuelta, he has yet to find the same form in the Tour. Nevertheless, Mas is having another good year, with podium places in the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tour of Catalonia and, more recently, seventh place in the Dauphiné.
7. Primoz Roglic - Red Bull-BORA-hansrohe
Speaking about bad marriages with the Tour de France,
Primoz Roglic knows a thing or two about it. The Slovenian from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe lost the yellow jersey to his compatriot Tadej Pogacar in 2020 and has not come close to the holy grail of cycling since: the yellow jersey.
In his last three participations, Roglic failed to finish, as was the case in the most recent Giro d'Italia. So it's a bit of a guessing game as to where he stands now, although he will always retain his status as a top rider.
6. Matteo Jorgenson - Visma | Lease a Bike
The second rider from Visma | Lease a Bike on this list is
Matteo Jorgenson, who, together with
Sepp Kuss, represents the United States in the Dutch team's Tour squad. Jorgenson finished eighth in last year's Tour de France and, in his own words, has been able to step it up a notch, which earned him his second consecutive overall victory in Paris-Nice.
With his experience in the classics, Jorgenson is also well suited for the first week and a half in northern France, where a lot of chaos is expected. Still, on paper, he is just a step below Jonas Vingegaard.
5. Florian Lipowitz - Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe
At Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, it's not just Primoz Roglic who is worth mentioning, but
Florian Lipowitz as well. The former biathlete is rapidly climbing the ranks of his team, where he broke through last year in the Tour de Romandie. At the end of the season, Lipo finished in the top ten of the Vuelta.
This year, the 24-year-old German has already finished second in Paris-Nice, fourth in the Basque Country, and, most recently, an impressive third in the Dauphiné. In all these races, he has also shown that he is not afraid to race and take matters into his own hands, making him a serious contender for the podium.
4. Joao Almeida - UAE Emirates-XRG
João Almeida is enjoying an almost equally impressive season in the shadow of Tadej Pogacar. The Portuguese rider from UAE Emirates-XRG won his last three races, the Tours of the Basque Country, Romandy, and Switzerland, and is now preparing for his second Tour de France, once again in the service of Pogacar.
Last season, Almeida finished fourth, 19 minutes behind his leader. In 2025, he will look to step up to the podium if that is possible in accordance with Pogacar's ambitions.
3. Remco Evenepoel - Soudal Quick-Step
Third place on this list goes to the man who finished third in last year's Tour de France: Belgian hope
Remco Evenepoel. After his serious crash in the winter, Evenepoel has been racing for two months now, making a particularly strong impression during his time trials in the Tour de Romandie and Dauphiné.
He has not yet been able to compete with Pogacar and Vingegaard on the climbs, although it should be noted that he also made good progress between the Dauphiné and the Tour last year. However, it is unfortunate that he will not have Mikel Landa, who finished fifth last season, at his side this year.
2. Jonas Vingegaard - Visma | Lease a Bike
Jonas Vingegaard will once again represent Visma | Lease a Bike in this year's Tour de France. The Danish rider, who rides for the Dutch team, has been a constant factor in the race for many years. He rode it for the first time in 2021 to replace Tom Dumoulin. He finished second that year before winning the race a year later.
He won the Tour again in 2023 but lost to his rival Pogacar last year. Visma | Lease a Bike is now back in the game, and you can bet that they plan to make things as difficult as possible for the Slovenian powerhouse.
1. Tadej Pogcar - UAE Emirates-XRG
Everyone agrees: Tadej Pogacar is once again the top favorite in this season's Tour de France. He now has three wins to his name since he first competed in 2020, and the comet from Komenda is eager to add a fourth.
The Critérium du Dauphiné was a convincing warm-up for Pogacar, who will be joined by Adam Yates and Almeida as his main domestiques in the mountains.
