Things have already gone seriously wrong more than once at this year’s Giro d’Italia. Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) was forced to abandon on day one after a heavy crash, and several stages since have featured high-speed incidents with consequences. But just as often, disaster is narrowly avoided as these images once again prove.
The most talked-about moment of this year’s Giro d’Italia is still Dion Smith’s near-crash after being clipped by a goat. But in stage five, it wasn’t an animal putting riders at risk, it was a human. Just as the peloton approached a roundabout at full speed, a man suddenly stepped toward the center. Riders flew past him on both sides, narrowly avoiding a disaster.
