Anna van der Breggen will defend the pink leader’s jersey in the women’s Giro d’Italia on Saturday, but she will have to do so with a battered body. The Dutch rider from
SD Worx-Protime crashed on Friday in the sixth stage, and she is feeling the effects of that fall.
Van der Breggen
came down on Friday around 50 kilometres from the finish, after which it took her a while to get back into the peloton. In the end, however, she finished in the same time as the other women.
“She still feels the after-effects of the crash, and it will be a matter of seeing how she gets through the night,” said sports manager Danny Stam.
“I am pretty battered, which is logical after such a hard crash. The Colle del Finestre will be very important with regard to the pink jersey. I will certainly start feeling very stiff. I hope I can recover a bit tonight and still have a good day tomorrow,” the rider herself said.
SD Worx-Protime on Van der Breggen crash
“Van der Breggen, together with Barbara Guarischi, was the biggest victim of the crash that marred stage 7. Because both were suffering quite a bit, they were examined by the team doctor,” SD Worx-Protime
said.
“It turned out that Van der Breggen and Guarischi had sustained multiple hematomas, bruises and wounds all over their bodies. They do not show any symptoms of concussion, but it will be a matter of waiting to see how they get through the night for the rest of the Giro.”
