Dylan Groenewegen will line up for his eighth Tour de France on Saturday. The Dutchman from Jayco-AlUla is aiming for his seventh stage win, but it will be his last in service of the Australian team. The former champion will leave the team, and according to sources, he is set to make an incredibly surprising move: Unibet Tietema Rockets seems to be the next destination for the sprint star.
Before the Dutch National Championships, Groenewegen had already indicated that he was looking for a new team. There were quite a few rumors about his next step, but the Dutchman couldn’t confirm anything yet. However, he did say that he already had a contract for next season. “That will probably be with another team, but I can’t say that yet. That has to remain between me and the team, but I’m really looking forward to a new challenge,” the sprinter said at the time.
Olav Kooij and Sam Welsford were briefly mentioned as potential replacements for Groenewegen, but the team that the powerful sprinter himself would move to remained a mystery. Until now, it seems. XDS-Astana was mentioned, which wouldn’t have been a surprise given the Dutch core there. But it looks like things are going in a completely different direction. Journalist Daniel Benson now reports that Unibet Tietema Rockets is in pole position in the race to sign the sprinter.

Tietema remains secretive about possible arrival of Groenewegen

Several sources have confided to the British cycling journalist that the 32-year-old Groenewegen would make a sensational move to Bas Tietema’s team. Tietema neither confirms nor denies the rumors. The transfer market opens on August 1, so who knows what the Rockets have in store for us on that date. It would by far be the biggest transfer in the still young history of the team, which has been making great strides in recent years.
Due to the lack of confirmation, Benson cannot say with certainty that the transfer is already a done deal, but he calls the story “more than just a rumor.” On Saturday, Groenewegen will try to take the yellow jersey: the first stage of the Tour de France is flat, making it a perfect opportunity for a sprinter to take the lead in the general classification.
