Tadej Pogacar deviated from his original training plan in the final weeks leading up to the Tour de France. After his partner
Urska Zigart’s serious crash in the Tour de Suisse, the Slovenian decided to skip his high-altitude training camp and spend
his time at home with her instead. Pogacar spoke about this ahead of the race.
Zigart crashed hard during the Tour de Suisse—in which Pogačar also
competed and won—on the stage to Locarno. She broke her jaw in the crash, which—given the severity of the fall—was actually
a lucky break. How is she doing now, a few weeks later?
"Thanks for your concern," Pogacar told us. “She’s doing a lot better already. She’s back to riding outside after having to ride indoors for a while. She wasn’t allowed to go outside on her bike yet, even though she really wanted to. She’s super strong and she’s recovering quickly.”
"A broken bone is never fun, but that broken jaw... "I think we can really see now just how tough she is, even when it comes to eating and everything," said Pogacar. "So she’s really doing well. It was a good decision to stay home together these past few days, and we had a great time. Now she’s already back out cycling with confidence."
Zigart's annual farewell post
Zigart,
in turn, posted her annual “see you later” message to her partner as the Tour de France got underway. “The crowd favorite is back. Another trip around the sun, another message in the run-up to the Tour. 🌍☀️Time flies… sometimes too fast. Too fast to think about what’s next, too fast to realize that the here and now is what matters, and that we should enjoy these moments.”
"You've already accomplished so much, but you've kept working hard and have always done your own thing even when others would struggle to find the motivation. Despite everything, you remain humble and true to yourself. You know how to maintain balance and always find time to enjoy the little things. I hope you enjoy this year, make wonderful memories with the guys, and above all, stay safe.'
Pogačar and UAE start the Tour de France team time trial last
As defending champion, Pogačar will start
stage 1's team time trial last. Given the heat in Barcelona this is blessing. Not only will UAE know the time they need to beat, but the temperature and wind
will be significantly less.
