Isaac Del Toro claimed victory on Sunday at the GP Industria & Artigianato. In the Italian one-day race, the Mexican rider from UAE Emirates-XRG proved strongest in a final sprint between three contenders. It marked Del Toro’s 10th win of the season, and an astonishing 81st win of the year for UAE. On what was a great day of racing, Italy also hosted its share of action. The 47th edition of the GP Industria & Artigianato took place on a local circuit in and around Larciano. A short but steep climb featured repeatedly, leading many to expect a race tailored to puncheurs—as has often been the case.
Six riders quickly formed the day’s breakaway: Tyler Stites (Caja Rural), Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies), Cedrik Bakke Chrisophersen (Unibet Tietema Rockets), David Delgado (Burgos Burpellet BH), Filippo Dignani (Sam-Vitalcare-Dynatek) and Matteo Spreafico (Mg.K Vis Costruzioni e Ambiente) took off and they quickly gained about five minutes on the peloton.
But that gap began to shrink steadily. With 55 kilometers to go, the break started to fall apart. Dignani and Stites pushed on alone, while Latour was reeled back in by the bunch. By the time 40 kilometers remained, the breakaway was completely over.
Favorites bombard each other on vicious climb
As the riders tackled the San Baronto climb for the penultimate time, the race exploded. Paul Double (Jayco AlUla) was the first to attack, but his move was quickly shut down. Then Samuele Battistella launched an effort, but he too was caught by the group of favorites.
More riders regrouped afterward, but another ascent of the climb triggered a fresh wave of attacks. Isaac Del Toro surged ahead and was joined by Davide Piganzoli (Polti VisitMalta) and Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana). The trio flew down the final descent together.
It all came down to a sprint between the three. Piganzoli kicked early, but Del Toro responded with a powerful acceleration, and no one could match him. Scaroni finished second, just behind the Mexican, with Piganzoli taking third.
