At SD Worx-Protime, they’re about to make Ernesto Maggioni persona non grata. On Saturday, the Italian served as the technical commissioner for the jury that made the decisions at the European Cyclocross Championships. As a result, Marie Schreiber was demoted from first to second place after a move in the sprint against Lucinda Brand. Maggioni is no stranger to Schreiber’s team.

Italian has been a cycling referee and commissioner for many years

Maggioni has been working as a cycling referee for a very long time and is an official UCI commissioner from Lombardy. Among other things, he has worked at the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia, and the biggest cyclocross races on the UCI calendar. He has also held several leadership positions with the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI), including as a member of the national arbitration committee.

Maggioni ousted Schreiber after sprint against Brand

As an experienced official, Maggioni knows what it takes to lead and judge a race. As a UCI jury member, he is responsible for enforcing the competition rules, ensuring the race is conducted fairly, inspecting equipment, and assessing violations or incidents in the peloton, as well as in track and cyclocross racing. He has also served as a judge in track cycling.

At the European Cyclocross Championships, the Italian came under heavy criticism for his decision to disqualify Schreiber. The rider at the center of the controversy herself called the decision “disrespectful", especially since Brand disagreed with the disqualification and declared Schreiber the rightful winner. Team managers for both riders also sided with the young Luxembourg rider from SD Worx-Protime.

Her team said it was proud of Schreiber, but it must also have seen who made the final decision. Maggioni is no stranger to the Dutch team when it comes to controversial decisions. For example, earlier this year—together with jury chairman Jurgen Deryckere—he disqualified Lorena Wiebes in the Giro d’Italia because her bike was allegedly too light after she won Stage 1.

To this day, the team and the rider maintain that mistakes were made in that process. Maggioni will once again take his seat on the jury on Sunday, which—on the second day of the European Championships—will also rule on the regulations for the junior men, U23 women, and finally the main event of the day: the elite men.
