Stage three of the
Tour of the Alps was briefly suspended on Wednesday morning after a mass crash in the opening phase of racing. Around 30 riders went down just 10 kilometres into the stage, requiring all available race ambulances to attend to those affected. The stage restarted after approximately 15 minutes.
Lorenzo Finn — who had impressed on stage two by climbing with the best riders in the race for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe — was the first significant name to be confirmed as a retirement. The young Italian had to be taken away by ambulance.
His team, Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe gave an update
via X to confirm that X-rays showed the Italian had broken in wrist.
Shortly afterwards, the race radio also confirmed the abandonment of Damien Howson (Pinarello-Q36.5), Lorenzo Nespoli (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort), Victor Langellotti (INEOS Grenadiers), Felix Engelhardt (Jayco AlUla) and Daniel Federspiel (Austria).
Howson breaks collarbone
Pinarello-Q36.5 were the first team on Wednesday to
provide an update on the injury to their rider Howson. The 33-year-old broke his collarbone in the crash — an unstable fracture, meaning the Australian will require surgery.
Finn went to hospital primarily as a precaution, complaining of pain in his hand and wrist, as could be seen in a photo. Sky Sport Italia also reported an elbow injury for Nespoli and a possible concussion for Engelhardt.
Pellizzari watched the crash happen at close quarters
After stage three — won by Tom Pidcock — race leader and Finn's teammate Giulio Pellizzari spoke about the mass crash. "It wasn't pleasant to watch. Lorenzo was one of the first to go down and, although I haven't had any news yet, I hope he's back quickly."
Langellotti abandons with head injury
INEOS Grenadiers posted an update X concerning Victor Langellotti. Citing 'skin abrasions and a head impact' after a medical assessment, the British team withdrew their rider from the race. INEOS went on to say, "He will return home for recovery under the care and close monitoring of our medical team, and will follow the UCI Concussion and return to training protocol. We wish him a speedy recovery!"
IDL Pro Cycling will bring you more information about the condition of the affected riders when we have it.
