Dutch national coach Gerben de Knegt announced the selections for the World Championships in mountain biking in Switzerland on Monday evening. As expected, Mathieu van der Poel and Puck Pieterse will compete on the weekend of September 13-14, when the world title race will be held in Crans-Montana. “The KNWU is traveling to the Swiss Alps with an ambitious team, where established names and young riders will compete on a course known for its long climbs, technical descents, and challenging rock gardens,” he said.
Van der Poel had another
rehearsal in Les Gets on Sunday, much to De Knegt's satisfaction. “Mathieu knows that the level is high, but he deliberately chooses to take on the challenge. It's great that he is putting himself in a vulnerable position in a discipline in which he has achieved great results in the past. His sixth place last weekend in Les Gets gives him confidence, and with the wide starting section, he can immediately make up positions. If he rides his own race, a lot is possible.”
In the women's race, Pieterse will defend her title, and Anne Terpstra will also compete. “Puck has the qualities to compete for a top position, although last weekend's result in Les Gets will have been disappointing for her. Anne is showing that she is becoming stronger and more consistent. This World Championship is a great opportunity to continue that,” said De Knegt.

De Knegt: "It's a fair course"
"It's a fair course where the strongest rider always comes out on top. The combination of altitude, climbing, and technique makes this World Championship tough but beautiful. We want to show that the Netherlands can compete across the board," says the national coach.
Technical director Wilbert Broekhuizen adds, "I am proud that we have two world-class riders in multiple disciplines, Puck and Mathieu, competing for medals. They are an inspiration to our Dutch mountain bikers and a figurehead for the Dutch delegation. The team has been working towards this goal all year, and as staff, we are doing everything we can to support the riders as best we can towards achieving a good ranking. We will be at the start with a lot of confidence, and I look forward to seeing everyone in action."
