Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) won the third and final stage of the Tour of the Basque Country for women in San Sebastian. The Dutch rider attacked fiercely on the final climb of the day and crossed the finish line solo in the coastal city, securing the overall victory. The Tour of the Basque Country had already been a hectic one. On day one,
Anna van der Breggen crashed hard on behalf of SD Worx-Protime, which meant she could not start the next day. Mischa Bredewold provided more than just a consolation prize by winning the first and second stages on behalf of the team, which also meant she could start stage three in the leader's jersey.
In that stage, she no longer had to contend with Saturday's runner-up, Liane Lippert. The German rider from Movistar had fallen ill at night and withdrew from the stage, which started and finished in San Sebastian.
Vollering leaves no doubt about who is the best
At the start of the stage, the peloton broke into echelons, with Vollering keeping her place. There was less excitement on the Jaizkibel, as the finish was still a long way off. Amanda Spratt was the first to reach the top on behalf of Lidl-Trek, ahead of Vollering and Bredewold. After that, there were a few attacks, with Le Mouel and Sara Martin.
Therefore, the second climb of the day, the Mendizorrotz, would be decisive. And that's exactly what happened. Vollering quickly got into gear and rode away, leaving her competitors without immediate
response. Antonia Niedermaier fought back on behalf of Canyon//SRAM but found herself isolated. The other competitors were already more than a minute behind at the top.
Vollering, therefore, started the descent with a comfortable lead before sealing her double victory in San Sebastian.
