Isaac del Toro thanked his UAE team after Montreal GP win, but also says: 'We didn’t understand the other teams'

Isaac del Toro didn’t seem to have his best day on Friday at the Quebec Grand Prix, but more than made up for it on Sunday at the Montreal Grand Prix. The Mexican rider from UAE Emirates-XRG rode a perfect race on the World Championship course, coming out on top in a head-to-head battle with Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM).

Del Toro was the only one who could keep up with Seixas when the Frenchman went all out on the final climb up Mont Royal. “We tried to have several riders in the final breakaway. Everyone on the team was incredibly strong. Adam was in the first breakaway, and then came Brandon McNulty, Adam Yates, and me.”

"I tried to keep up with the big attacks behind me. In the end, we were in a pretty good position. The guys put me in a position to fight for the win. I'm really happy with the team's support; I really have them to thank for this," he said in the flash interview.

UAE Emirates-XRG took control of the race. Why? “It was a strange situation at the start of the race; we didn’t quite understand the other teams. That’s why we decided to maintain a normal pace. To be honest, I wasn't feeling very well, but the team carried me through it, and in the final stretch, we gave it another try.”

Del Toro also had an explanation for his off day in Quebec. “I always try to do my best, but we’re only human; you can’t have a great day every day. The team worked so hard for me today that I wanted to make the most of it. I didn’t feel great in Quebec, and I did have some doubts today, but thanks to Brandon, Adam, Félix, Florian, and the team, it became a lot easier.”

"I'm not really sure what it is," he says in response to the question of what was different on Sunday. "Sometimes I just clear my mind and try to make the smartest choice. My body responds better year after year. We don’t put any pressure on ourselves, and it’s great to achieve results like this. Last year was good too, but this year is truly amazing.”

And what does that mean for the World Championships? “It shows that we’re in good shape for Mexico,” Del Toro grins.
