Richard Carapaz will not be at the start of the Vuelta a España on Saturday, his team EF Education–EasyPost confirmed on Tuesday. The Ecuadorian rider has now set his sights on the World Championships in Rwanda and the Italian autumn races. “Richard will miss the Vuelta a España, but the season is far from over,” EF stated. Carapaz had already been forced to skip the Tour de France earlier this summer due to gastrointestinal issues. “After a difficult recovery, Richie and our medical staff decided to delay his return to racing in order to ensure he can perform at his best.”
“After the illness, I had to stop training multiple times because I couldn’t go more than two or three days in a row,” said Carapaz. “Now that I’m back in Ecuador, I’m trying to return to a normal training rhythm and continue with the plan we set. I’m almost fully recovered now.”

Carapaz shifts focus to World Championships
“Our next goals are the Italian classics, especially Il Lombardia, and the World Championships in Rwanda,” Carapaz added. “It’s a very special World Championships for me. I believe I have a big opportunity there, and I want to prepare for it as best as possible.”
“That’s why I’ve come back to Ecuador: to train at altitude, to rediscover my motivation, and to focus 100%. There are a few factors working in our favor, and we want to make the most of them,” concluded the former Olympic champion.
