Sakarias Koller Loland stuns favourites to win Trofeo Matteotti for Uno-X Mobility

Another Italian autumn classic in a short space of time! On Saturday, Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) claimed victory in the Memorial Marco Pantani, but the Spaniard was not present in Pescara. The hilly Trofeo Matteotti did feature riders such as Benoît Cosnefroy (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) and Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) on the start line.

An early breakaway was formed by four Italians, but they were never given much room by the peloton. With 90 kilometres remaining, their move was already over. The pre-finale was opened early by Samuele Zoccarato (MBH Bank CSB Telefort Com) and Lorenzo Germani (Groupama-FDJ), but they were later joined by a quartet of riders.

However, that attack also did not last long. It was a case of stop-start racing in the hills around Pescara. A dangerous group looked like it could make the decisive move with 35 kilometres remaining, featuring Natnael Tesfatsion (Movistar), Hugo de la Calle (Burgos Burpellet BH), Brieuc Rolland (Groupama-FDJ) and Tomas Kopecky (Unibet Rose Rockets). Cosnefroy also managed to join the group.

Later, Lukas Kubis (Unibet Rose Rockets), Marco Schrettl (XDS Astana) and Jai Hindley (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) also bridged across, but despite the strength of the breakaway, it was brought back with around 25 kilometres remaining. Joris Delbove (TotalEnergies) and Andrii Ponomar (General Store - Essegibi - F.Lli Curia) entered the final lap as the leading duo, although the peloton was not far behind.

The Ukrainian rider then went solo, but his move did not last long thanks to the work of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. On the final, demanding climbs, Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) launched an acceleration, while Alexandre Delettre (TotalEnergies) and Ludovico Crescioli (Polti VistiMalta) were able to follow. However, they were caught, and in the sprint it was Sakarias Koller Loland (Uno-X Mobility) who proved to be the strongest.
