Will Biniam Girmay close the Intermarché-Wanty chapter in his career after this season? It could well be. Judging by an Instagram post by agent Alex Carera from Leuven, the future of the man from Eritrea has become clear this week, while Le Soir reports that Girmay will sign with Israel-Premier Tech.
The winner of the green jersey in the 2024 Tour de France still has a contract with Intermarché-Wanty until 2028, but that team is known to be in advanced talks to merge with Lotto. Because only one team is allowed to take over the current contracts in such a merger—which will probably be Lotto—Girmay is free to go wherever he wants.
With Arnaud De Lie, there is already a similar type of rider on the merged team, although it was previously reported that the two would have no problem competing together. Girmay now seems to be playing it safe and going for a three-year contract with Israel-Premier Tech, which may continue under the name Premier Tech in 2026.

Girmay has yet to have a top year in 2025

According to Le Soir, Girmay no longer wanted to wait and see how the situation with the new merged team would unfold. The 25-year-old Eritrean could become the new classic leader at Israel-Premier Tech and excel in the sprints, although Girmay has yet to have a top year in 2025. He hasn't won so far, and his last victory dates back to the Tour in 2024.
Girmay, now 25, made his definitive breakthrough in 2022 by winning Gent-Wevelgem. He now has 16 professional victories, including three stage wins in the Tour de France, one Giro d'Italia stage, and one-day races such as the Circuit Franco-Belge and the Surf Coast Classic. So far this season, his most notable achievement has been finishing fifth in the Bretagne Classic.
