Jonathan Milan had a very good UCI World Track Championships in Shanghai. He left with a world record, a second individual pursuit title and a team pursuit silver. He has also started looking ahead to 2027, when Filippo Ganna becomes his teammate at Lidl-Trek. He also left Shanghai with one big questions mark: what to do about Team Denmark at the LA Olympics.

For Milan, the track was the whole point of his autumn. "I put everything into the track in these last few weeks and I'm happy," he told Virgilio Sport, calling Shanghai "the ending I wanted" to his season. Then he moved on to next year: "With Ganna at Lidl-Trek, we'll have fun."
Ganna joins Lidl-Trek on 1 January 2027 on a deal running until 2029, according to NovaraToday. Milan told Messaggero Veneto that he and Ganna go back a long way: "I'm happy that next season we'll race together at Lidl-Trek, so we can open a new chapter in our careers."

Jonathan Milan sees Ganna as a 'role model

He also called Ganna a role model. "I also want to mention Ganna. He has won everything. I started on the track taking inspiration from him, as I did from Elia Viviani and Davide Plebani, riders who helped me reach this level."
It is not yet clear how the two will fit together on the road. Quotidiano.net suggests Ganna will probably end up in Milan's lead-out train.
When his move was announced, Ganna said he wants to do well in the Classics, according to the same outlet. Milan says the team will pick his goals after a first training camp in Germany and a trip to Toronto and Mexico.

Milan thinks things will be different at the Olympics

Eurosport Italia points out that the rivalry looks different at the Olympics. Italy beat Denmark in the Tokyo final and again in the bronze medal race in Paris. Denmark's win over Italy came in the 2023 world final. Milan made clear the score isn't settled.
"They are incredibly strong and very close-knit. In the individual event they also showed they have great talent, but first of all we must not get discouraged, we have to believe," he told Messaggero Veneto.
"We know it will be tough, but at the Games in two years we want to try to beat them. The challenge is on. In fact the challenge continues: we have been fighting the Danes for medals for years."

Ganna: 'Four races, four medals'

Ganna was happy with his week too. Il Post reports that his individual pursuit bronze was his 16th medal at the Track World Championships.
"We did everything possible to honour this trip, we gave everything and now it's well-deserved holidays for everyone," he told Bicisport. "It was a good trip: four races, four medals. I can't complain."
