Michael Matthews will miss the Tour de France. His team announced on Friday that the Australian rider from Jayco AlUla may have suffered a pulmonary embolism and will, therefore, be unable to compete in any sporting events in the near future.
Matthews was originally scheduled to make his comeback on Friday in the GP Gippingen and then ride the Tour de Suisse in preparation for the Tour, but he will not compete in either race.
"During a recent altitude training camp, our medical staff discovered signs of a pulmonary embolism in Michael and have subsequently decided to pause all physical activities as a precautionary measure," Jayco AlUla said in a press release on Friday morning.
"Michael's condition is stable. Our medical staff is now thoroughly investigating the extent of the issue and possible cause to define a safe and optimal recovery process," the team added. "During this period of investigation, as a safeguarding measure, Michael will not return to competition to avoid any risks. This means he will not participate in the Tour de France."

Dropping Matthews also bitter pill for Groenewegen

Matthews has previously won four stages in the Tour de France and took the green jersey in 2017. His absence is also a setback for sprinter Dylan Groenewegen, who could have used Matthews' help in preparing for the sprints. With the first week's route, there would normally have been plenty of opportunities for Matthews himself, who won his last race at Eschborn-Frankfurt at the time.
The 34-year-old Australian has competed in the Tour de France eight times so far. He also took part last year but failed to make an impact. It is unclear who will replace him at Jayco AlUla, which relies on Ben O'Connor, Eddie Dunbar, and Groenewegen as its main contenders.
