Following the example of Visma | Lease a Bike and Tour de France Femmes winner Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, FDJ-Suez's Demi Vollering has also launched a documentary about La Grande Boucle. In 45 minutes, you get a behind-the-scenes look at the Dutch team, which ultimately finished third.
Before the race, Vollering spoke to her teammates. “With this team, I am confident that we can go for yellow. We have to enjoy it and live in the moment, without being afraid.”
FDJ-Suez stated in advance that a crash would be the worst-case scenario. “We mainly anticipate, but we cannot anticipate that. Especially after Marta Cavalli's fall in the 2023 Tour,” team manager Stephen Delcourt refers to the Italian, who fell hard on her head.
Vollering also suffered a crash in the Tour, on day three on the way to Angers. “Unfortunately, it's part of the sport,” the Dutch rider said. The next day, she was able to let her team leaders know that she was feeling better, although in the background, there was consternation about the way Delcourt and Jos van Emden of Visma | Lease a Bike were arguing back and forth.
That topic was not avoided in the documentary. “They are discussing what to tell the media. We are preparing our golden cage,” Vollering remarked with a smile in the documentary. One day later, Van Emden interrupted an interview with Lieselot Decroix to give her a hug: let bygones be bygones.
Of course, the tough final weekend also came up again. After Ferrand-Prévot's first coup, Vollering said “sorry” to sports director Lars Boom, who didn't want to hear it. “You do what you can and then you don't have to say sorry.” A day later, teammate Juliette Labous told the Dutchwoman the same thing.
